the outsiders

The Outsiders was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I've not read the book so perhaps it would've clicked more for me if I had... The opening song was good but it didn't keep that vibe for the rest of the show, bar a few songs. I could not really get over the majority of the actors style of singing which fel wayyyy more suited to pop music than musical theatre. ESPECIALLY Brody Grant my goodness super distracting.

It fits with the music production as a whole, but I just think if it leant more into that orchestral sound, it would've had more impact and kick for me - think Newsies or West Side Story. The songs are good as songs but sometimes it didn't really feel like I was listening to a musical? Which was a bit of an odd experience. Little Brother blew all the other songs out of the water - SO GOOD!

Despite my grievances, the plot is good and the characters are very compelling! I do think seeing it live would be a whole different experience. After this, I definitely want to read the book and see if anything changes.
